“I’m so happy you’re here,” Armani used to say to guests as they arrived at his parties. That’s just one of the many hosting lessons from businessman and past entertainment veteran Charles Finch in a New York Times write-up on his new book, The Night Before BAFTA.

If you’re playing host for Memorial Day weekend, you may be looking for the simplest way to throw a party that your guests won’t forget. Luckily, if you want to actually enjoy the party yourself, Finch puts together a road map for both how to host a great party and how to enjoy it yourself.

Keep reading for hist simple tips on how to host a memorable party (and enjoy it yourself).

TIP 1: Make it a party, not an event.

Don’t try to make a party more than it is – a celebration. “The purpose of my party is to hug the people that I like, or just shake the hands of people I really admire, and have some nice red wine and some food.”

TIP 2: Introduce everyone.

The absolute worst thing at any party is to have awkward silence at the table because people seated together don’t know one another. To avoid this, Finch recommends that when making seat placements, try to put friends together to help keep the conversation flowing. As Finch puts it, “I want to make sure the feeling of the room is really cozy.”

TIP 3: Make it memorable

Finch’s biggest point of advice? “I believe that reputation is repetition.” Once you find a method that works, stick with it. He takes great pride in putting on a great BAFTA party every year, and he acknowledges there are certain things you just can’t change. He always has the same starters for dinner, always uses white lilies for their scent, and always keeps a mariachi band on standby.
